From Auto Mechanic to Vascular Surgeon
Only 2 percent of vascular surgeons are women, and Dr. Susanne Woloson is proud to be a female board-certified vascular surgeon.
Growing up in California, Dr. Woloson spent her childhood fixing cars. She sees a connection between her childhood fascination with automobiles and her career a vascular surgeon, a profession she loves. For example, a car needs oil to circulate to move. Similarly, veins need proper blood flow for optimal health. Dr. Woloson is committed to improving the vein health of her patients, an adjustment that can benefit their whole lives just as automobiles need attention to run their best.
After earning her Bachelor of Science Degree in Biochemistry from University of California, Davis, Dr. Woloson moved to the Midwest. She received her MD and her Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from Chicago Medical School. She trained in General Surgery at the University of Chicago with Fellowship training in Vascular Surgery at Loyola University. During her internship, she realized she wanted to devote her career to vascular and vein surgery.
It was a natural progression because after majoring in biochemistry, Dr. Woloson was deciding between the pharmaceutical industry or medicine. She chose medicine because that gave her the ability to help and treat people.
When Dr. Woloson founded Northwest Vascular and Vein Specialists, she knew she had the devotion needed to provide excellent treatment for venous disease. She has been in private practice since 2000. Dr. Woloson’s practice prides itself on having state-of-the-art equipment and well-trained staff.
In fact, Dr. Woloson is known for becoming an expert in new vein techniques as they develop. She was one of the first vascular surgeons to perform minimally invasive vein ablations ten years ago, a procedure that is now common. She continues to educate herself on any technological advances in the field and is a member of the American College of Phlebology and regularly attends meetings focusing on venous disease.
“I love veins and enjoy moving past blockages and being able to improve the lives of the people who come to my practice. I want patients to know that I understand the importance of having the confidence to show your legs, even if you’ve been hiding your veins for years. I have the experience to resolve your symptoms using treatments that make you feel comfortable,” says Dr. Woloson.
Another reason Dr. Woloson is popular is that she is honest and open with her patients. She takes the time to communicate with everyone she meets and helps them truly understand what is going on with their venous disease and treatment options. “I try to stay away from confusing medical terms and make sure they have a clear understanding of their options.”
“I respect the busy lifestyles of our patients and take the time to create a custom treatment plan for every individual. This way, we can create a timeline that is reasonable and manage expectations and results,” she says.
With such vast experience, Dr. Woloson’s knowledge is sought after by patients and doctors alike. Doctors from around the country come to Northwest Vascular and Vein Specialists to train and learn about safe venous procedures and accurate ultrasounds.
There are many painful symptoms of varicose veins, including itching, burning, swelling, or numbness. Some people also suffer from leg swelling, night cramps, and restless leg syndrome. All of these are vascular issues.
Treatment options include:
Endovenous laser therapy (EVLT) for varicose veins. Varicose veins can often be unsightly and painful. EVLT is a state of the art procedure that causes varicose veins to become smaller by using a laser to seal the vein’s walls together. This procedure is both quick and effective, taking less than one hour to complete.
Laser treatments for spider veins. Spider veins are similar to varicose veins but smaller. Northwest Vascular and Vein Specialists treat spider veins with cosmetic laser treatments using a handheld device. This procedure also takes less than one hour, and patients can get back to their regular routines very quickly.
Ultrasound-Guided Sclerotherapy for deeper varicose veins. Ultrasound helps to pinpoint the location of the vein. The procedure is quick and minimally invasive. Best of all, results can be seen and felt almost immediately.
Feeling comfortable and looking healthy is possible, even when you are self-conscious about your legs. Whether you are concerned about the cosmetic appearance of spider veins or if you are having painful symptoms as a result of a complex vein issue, Dr. Woloson can help you.
“Dr. Woloson and her expert team are amazing. My experience has been great - I had significant issues in both legs, and they quickly identified the cause and came up with a plan. The swelling and pain I've lived with is now gone. I have sent over my mom, sister-in-law, and friends and all have had the same great experience. Best decision I’ve ever made!” – client testimonial
Since Dr. Woloson insists on a healing environment to treat the whole person, she has built a friendly and professional support staff. Northwest Vascular and Vein Specialists do all their own patient billing in-house and they accept all major insurances. In keeping with this personal attention, they make sure they can get you in for appointments quickly, not months down the road.
The team at Northwest Vascular and Vein Specialists has such a high success rate they have opened their first and second locations within five years and maintained their connection with each individual at each site. The Arlington Heights office is at 1614 Central Avenue, Suite 100, and the Libertyville location is at 900 Technology Way, Suite 230.
